The Miami CTSI is pleased to announce Sonya Kaur, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology, is the newest recipient of its Mentored Research Career Development Program Award (K12).
Dr. Kaur’s research project will investigate whether sleep disturbances increase the presence of Alzheimer’s Disease biomarkers and other associated pathologies in Hispanic/Latino older adults.
Hispanic/Latino adults are up to four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than non-Hispanic whites and may present with unique risk factors for the disease.
Through her study, Dr. Karu seeks to enhance an understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease risk and obtain much needed information that will guide future interventions.
The CTSI’s K12 program provides structured research training for early-stage faculty to acquire skills and experience needed to become outstanding independent clinical and translational investigators.
Dr. Kaur will receive mentorship, an individualized research and career development plan, experiential training with established faculty, and access to educational programs and supportive resources through CTSI’s various programs.
Her primary mentor is Alberto R. Ramos, Professor of Clinical Neurology and Research Director of Sleep Medicine Program at the Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Ramos is a previous CTSI K award scholar.
