Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D.The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is thrilled to announce that Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D., Director of the Mailman Center for Child Development, has been appointed the Lifespan and Special Populations Lead for the CTSI.

Dr. Armstrong has been an integral part of the CTSI since its inception and brings extensive expertise in integrating translational science across the lifespan.

In his new role, Dr. Armstrong will continue his collaborative work on the Clinical and Translational Science Award’s (CTSA) Lifespan Enterprise Committee, which is dedicated to improving health outcomes for individuals across all stages of life.

This committee focuses on investigating disparities in disease progression and treatment for special and complex populations. It also works toward developing cohesive strategies to advance translational science across all phases of research.

Dr. Armstrong’s contributions are nationally recognized through his work with the CTSA Lifespan EC and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) network. As part of his efforts, he leads the Engaging Individuals with Disability in the Research Process Working Group, which recently completed its first year of groundbreaking work. This initiative seeks to provide researchers with knowledge, tools, and resources to engage individuals with disabilities in the research process as well as enhance the quality and relevance of scientific outcomes by integrating the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities.

The group aims to publish a comprehensive toolkit by December 2025, providing a generalizable model for engaging diverse populations in research across various diseases and conditions.

In addition to his new role, Dr. Armstrong is the founding director of the CTSI’s Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Investigation (MSCTI) program. His leadership has left a lasting impact on the development of the next generation of translational scientists.

The CTSI looks forward to his continued leadership and contributions to the CTSI and the broader scientific community.
