Tell us about your career at UM?

My journey at the University of Miami has been defined by a dedication to healthcare excellence through clinical research and advanced practice nursing. Beginning in 2015 with a research fellowship in breast cancer research, I gained a strong foundation and understanding of the rigor and impact of research, which motivated my commitment to pursuing this career.

The guidance I received from mentors like Aisha Khan and Dr. JoNell Potter was transformational for my career development. Aisha Khan, a leader in stem cell research, introduced me to the complexities and high standards required for clinical research professionals working in clinical studies. Her mentorship taught me to approach each research project with precision, rigor, and an unwavering commitment to scientific inquiry, and taught me skills that became foundational as I took on more responsibility.

Dr. JoNell Potter, an expert in clinical research nursing, provided invaluable insights into managing the unique needs of clinical research within a nursing framework. Her mentorship emphasized patient-centered care in research settings, helping me understand how to balance the complexities of clinical trials with compassionate patient engagement. Through her guidance, I developed a strategic approach to the role of an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) specialized in Clinical Research. My current mentors Jessica MacIntyre and Evelyn Wempe have inspired and guided me to Clinical Research APP management that ensures both high-quality research and comprehensive patient care. Their mentorship shaped my philosophy as an APP Manager, allowing me to lead with both scientific and clinical excellence, and inspiring me to create an environment where APPs can thrive and contribute as valuable members of the clinical research team.

What do you like best about your role?

What I like best about my role is the opportunity to develop and highlight the significance of Clinical Research APPs in oncology. This role allows me to showcase the impact APPs have on advancing clinical research and patient care, particularly in complex fields like oncology. Serving as a sub-investigator, the clinical research APP plays a pivotal role in guiding patients through clinical studies that often vary in complexity. With their specialized support, APPs help patients navigate the clinical trial process, addressing individual needs and ensuring patients are well-informed and understand the risk and benefits of their participation. This tailored approach not only enhances the patient experience but also aligns with the essential aspects of study compliance and protocol adherence. I am passionate about optimizing APP involvement in clinical research, refining workflows that include research opportunities for patients in clinical care and creating educational opportunities that expand APP skills in both clinical and research settings. By focusing on the vital contributions of APPs, I aim to strengthen opportunities for clinical research professionals and advocate for their essential role in advancing oncology research and improving patient outcomes.

What is one “feel good” moment from your work?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the profound sense of purpose I feel in being part of an institution so deeply committed to advancing new therapies and groundbreaking treatments. Knowing that I am part of a team rigorously advocating for patients and helping them access every possible developmental treatment available truly shreds away my stress. Caring for patients who respond well to these new treatment options and being part of the process that demonstrates the patients are fully informed and make the commitment to take the risk and help move science forward for all those that follow brings an even greater sense of accomplishment for me in this role. Witnessing the impact of innovative therapies firsthand not only fulfills my passion for clinical research but also reinforces my commitment to pushing the boundaries of oncology care, bringing both hope and progress to patients on their journey.

What is one tip you offer other CRPs?

One tip I have learned is to prioritize teamwork and workflow development when implementing a clinical research study. Establishing a collaborative environment and transparent communication among team members creates a streamlined and compliant comprehensive, 360-degree model of patient care.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Outside of my professional work, I dedicate time to volunteering as a primary care provider at a community clinic that serves low-income patients. This experience allows me to have a meaningful impact on individuals who often lack access to essential healthcare resources. In addition, I enjoy playing volleyball on the beach, which offers a great balance of physical activity and relaxation, allowing me to recharge and connect with others in a laid-back setting.
