TriNetX

TriNetX is a federated health research network that provides researchers with access to de-identified electronic health record (EHR) data from various healthcare organizations. Through a secure, web-based platform, investigators can identify patient cohorts and explore real-world clinical data.

Researchers use TriNetX for study feasibility assessments, cohort discovery, and observational research (including retrospective analyses and comparative effectiveness studies). It is particularly valuable for estimating eligible patient populations, supporting grant development, and enabling multi-site collaboration across institutions.

Requesting Access

Active UM employees and students with a CaneID can request access to TriNetX. Individuals must first view a mandatory training video available on the CTSI’s training and webinar platform.

Steps to Watch Video

After viewing the video, users should:

  • download a copy of the completion certificate
  • and then complete the TriNetX User Account Request ticket in ServiceNow
    • This can be found under the Research Access & Support catalog filter. Note that the completion certificate must be attached to the submitted ticket. Individuals will receive an email notification once access has been granted.

TriNetX Website

Users can then log in to the TriNetX LIVE site with their CaneID and password through Single Sign-On.

Export Patient ID Re-identification

Users wishing to re-identify queries run exclusively on University of Miami data will first need to submit a Data Broker Services (Clinical) Request in ServiceNow for approval of the re-identification request. This request can be found under the Data Services catalog filter. A copy of the query criteria should also be attached to ServiceNow request (details on how to generate this can be found in the mandatory training video noted above).

Re-identification lists will not be released until UM Data Broker approval has been received. Once approval has been granted, ITS will contact users to share the corresponding study for re-identification. Details on how to share studies can be found in the TriNetX_SharingStudiesInstructions.pdf file in UM Box.

Dataset Requests from the TriNetX Research Network

Requests for limited datasets from the TriNetX Research Network are initiated in the TriNetX LIVE platform, where details of the project (including status of any related funding) should be provided. Note that TriNetX may charge a usage fee for funded studies.

Users will then be sent a Dataset Order Form that will need to be executed through Conga Contracts, even if there is no usage fee being charged.

Once the Dataset Order Form has been fully executed, and IRB approval for the study has been received, the CTSI Health Informatics team will download the dataset and load it into a Secure Workbench where the study team will be able to perform their analyses.

The provisioned dataset must remain on the Secure Workbench and only aggregate results will be permissible for exporting out. The CTSI Health Informatics team will purge all datasets at the end date specified in the Dataset Order Form.

Advanced Analytics in TriNetX

The Advanced Analytics features in TriNetX may only be used by individuals with the credentials and qualifications to apply them appropriately. To ensure this, all requests for use of these features will be reviewed by the UM Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core (BCCC) before access to these features is granted. In this review, BCCC will review the analytic plan and also whether the study team has a biostatistician meeting the qualifications to use the Advanced Analytics features. For study teams that do not have a biostatistician meeting these criteria, BCCC will help facilitate connections to potential collaborators.

These reviews can be initiated via the BCCC request form and the initial consultation is available through CTSI support. Note that access to the Advanced Analytics features will only be granted to qualified biostatisticians on the study team.
