K-Faculty Leading University Excellence in Science (KLUES)

Connection seminar at CTSI commons

KLUES, K-faculty Leading University Excellence in Science, (formally known as The Connection) is a group for career development awardees and faculty seeking research career development opportunities at the University of Miami.

KLUES focuses on information sharing and group learning, cooperative mentoring activities, leadership development, and networking opportunities.

KLUES meets monthly, with alternating, focused, didactic sessions. These sessions are envisioned as:

  1. KLUES Kollective: a brainstorming/design studio where your work-in-progress is presented in 5-10 minutes for colleagues (mentors; subject matter experts, friends, others) to provide feedback that could potentially help your project, manuscript or grant proposal;
  2. KLUES success stories and career do’s and don’ts sessions with university and external experts; and,
  3. KLUES research mentoring training and interactive sessions.

Background

In 2018, the Miami CTSI, launched the Connection for Research Career Enhancement, in response to three challenges faced by early career investigators:  1) isolation and difficulties in overcoming barriers to collaborating across scientific disciplines, 2) a lack of information about research resources and trainings, and 3) a need for more mentorship.

After it’s NIH-funded award in 2023, the CTSI broadened the program’s scope with the goal of further engaging junior and mid-career faculty interested in developing and enhancing their research careers.
